Use a food-grade mineral oil. A new cutting board should be conditioned with 2-3 coats before using it.
Yes. The oil provided with your board is ideal for keeping your board hydrated, and is 100% food safe, gluten-free, and vegan.
No. Our glue is 100% vegan, without any hide or animal protein.
It depends on frequency of use. If water no longer beads on the surface of the board, it may be time to re-apply oil.
Using a dishwasher is not recommended. The prolonged exposure to heat may shorten the lifespan of the board.
Stella Falone is the combination of two first names. They refer to two female employees of the Crelicam ebony mill in Yaoundé, Cameroon, which supplies and processes the West African ebony used for the cutting boards. Crelicam also supplies ebony fingerboards and other parts for musical instruments. The Stella Falone brand of kitchenware products was created with the vision of helping Crelicam employees produce greater economic value around this tonewood.
The West African ebony (Diospyros crassiflora Hiern) used for these cutting boards is legally and ethically sourced in Cameroon. Your purchase of Stella Falone kitchenware products supports responsible ebony harvesting and replanting practices. We are committed to providing customers with quality wood products, respecting the environment, and improving the livelihood of Cameroonians. By diversifying our ebony product offerings, we are able create more value from each ebony tree, reduce waste, and help Cameroonians produce a more sustainable economy around Crelicam ebony.
Currently they are produced in El Cajon, California, on the campus of guitar manufacturer Taylor Guitars, which co-owns the Crelicam mill with Madinter, a Spanish wood supplier.
African sapele is commonly used, along with other woods that feature similar color and density. This can vary based on availability, with the goal of recycling unused wood from the guitar-making process.
This is simply the natural pigment from ebony wood coming off the untreated surface. This natural residue is completely non-toxic and food-safe, and the pigment transfer will diminish over time. The oil provided with your board is food-safe, but it will pick up a small amount of the pigment in the ebony wood during conditioning. So will water, and so will soap. Again, do not be concerned and remember that untreated ebony, like the wood used in your cutting board, has been safely used in food-related products for hundreds of years — tools like salad tongs, spatulas and chopsticks. Precious little of the pigment ends up on food, and any that does is not harmful. It’s just as safe as the red in a tomato or the brown in chocolate.
